GLOBAL SPOTTING REPORTS
USA - TN, LA, AR and MS
Nashville – Apr 2013
LANDSIDE
Don’t think there are any views from the terminal. A car is recommended here. There is an excellent spot near the Embraer facility where you will find a car park on elevated land giving great views of the field.
The General Aviation area on the other side of the airport is also worth driving around and if you continue around the perimeter on the south east corner there maybe some stored aircraft there.
AIRSIDE
Good views of the mainline movements but don’t expect to see any aircraft in storage or maintenance.
HOTELS
Not Known
WHAT TO EXPECT
Mainline traffic is fairly quiet with southwest having a good number of flights. The main reason for a visit would be for the embraer facility. I logged 26 Delta embraers along with several others.
Nashville Other Airports - Apr 2013
Smyrna
About 20 miles south east of Nashville. At the time there where still 6 B727’s derelict, along with several Jetstreams, although these where to hard to get. A few other things where present including a metro, B1900 , J41 and J31 on general aviation.
N256US N268US N272US
N385PA N389PA N590CA
Murfreesboro
A few miles further down the road from Smyrna. Mid Tennessee University has a facility here and use a former Fed Ex B727. N117FE.
Memphis – Oct 2018
LANDSIDE
The top of the new multi storey car park offered good views. The car park wall is mostly too high to see over but there are gaps periodically and the area where the lifts are provides a decent view of the runways either side of the terminal. It is also possible to see a lot of the Fedex from here as well as the Tennessee Air National Guard ramp. The top level wasn’t open for use but its possible to park on the level below and walk up. Follow signs for economy parking which is only $6 for upto 24 hours.
Its difficult to find many places on the perimeter to park but there is a road accessible from the south side of the airport which runs parallel inbetween the main runways. It would be possible to get good views of the runways from here but you may get moved on.
Fedex are making it increasingly difficult to see the aircraft in and around there facility. The best place would be from the Tennessee Technology Centre which has good views of some of the ramp along with resident B727 N510FE. Combine this with the car park and you should log most of them.
AIRSIDE
Plenty of windows allow good views of the mainline traffic. Some Fedex Stands can be seen from the bottom of concourse C and most movements can be monitored.
HOTELS
None that I know of with views.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Fedex being the obvious reason to visit. They are now much easier to see as they have a major rush during the day. Arrivals throughout the morning with most in by midday and then they all depart from around 1430 to 1700. This then repeats again from about 10pm through the night. From the car park its not possible to log most of them because they are all parked nose on or are parked in front of each other, so its best to plan to be there for the departure rush. You should log about 100 as they taxi out.
Delta used to have a very large operation here but there is little left of it. The airport is like a ghost town and not worth spending any time here for the passenger flights.
The Airport fire service has the remains of 2 aircraft which are parked on a bit of land to the south of the airport. C-FTMG DC9 and N528XJ B146. To see them follow airways boulevard south and then turn left onto E Holmes Road. Keep looking to your left where you will see whats left of the fuselages.
The Air National Guard had 3 C17s parked up which could also be read off by driving around the perimeter on the south east side.
Tupelo – Oct 2018
About 100 miles south east. Storage facility although most aircraft seem to get broken up pretty quick with only a few remaining at the time.
Stuttgart – Oct 2018
About 120 miles west. Probably about 25 aircraft WFU here at the time. Most could be read but a bunch where parked close together in various states of being broken up.
Walnut Ridge – Apr 2013
About 100 miles to the north west. Lots of aircraft end up here to be parted out. They don’t appear to waste any time either as the only things left at the time where N643NW B747 and TF-ATJ B747. The only thing you can be sure to see is N86SW B737 which has been turned into the Parachute Inn Restaurant. They have put tables inside the fuselage so its possible to have a meal inside the plane. Don’t expect high quality though.
Blytheville – Feb 2016
About 85 miles north en route to St Louis. Another storage facility with several Eva MD90’s, some Delta B757’s and a Fedex B727 amongst others.
Greenwood and Vicinity – Feb 2016
Greenwood is a storage facility about 100 miles south of Memphis. I didn’t visit as I didn’t need anything there. To the west of Greenwood near Ittabena is a B727 used as a hunting lodge. N7027U in old United cls. Not the easiest to find and requires a few miles driving down dirt roads. Google Earth coordinates are N33,29,32,42 – W90,25,54,61. From Highway 82, take road 546 north, then west onto Road 536 at the T Junction, then south on Road 137.
Further west in Bolivar near to Benoit is the remains of B727 N88701. There was a full fuselage there but just a small section now remains in old Continental cls. Google Earth coordinates N33,39,35,09 – W91,03,03,91. From Benoit take west on Preston St then south onto Bolivar Road.
New Orleans
Not really worth a visit unless your passing through. There is another airport here called Lakefront which had a number of Biz present.
Baton Rouge - Feb 2016
B727 N777KY is on the fire dump. A couple of Biz where seen but very little else.
Lake Charles - Feb 2016
B727 N188FE remains WFU and a few aircraft on maintenance.
