WHAT TO EXPECT
Avianca are based with there Central America fleet. Previously Taca aircraft. They have 3 waves each day with the rest of time being very quiet so check timetables.
The US Air Force have a base here with a C17, 3 P3s and a DHC8 seen. A left seat for arrival and right for departure are your best chance of seeing these.
Ilopango
This is the old airport about an hour away from the new airport, and is now a military facility. There is a museum there which can be accessed. You have to approach the guards at the main gate and they get someone from the museum to escort you. I had a driver who could speak Spanish which was helpful. There are several air force planes parked here and the museum has a balcony overlooking the ramp. A DC6 is preserved along with B727 N469FE which is used by the technical school. Also you can see the tail of a DC9 which has been WFU here for a while. N813TL.
If you need a driver then I recommend a guy called Guillermo. He was very helpful and you can contact him on whats app. Tel +50376833410. He charged me $100 to take me to my hotel, then to Ilopango the next morning and then back to the airport.
