PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Port Moresby - Mar 2018

LANDSIDE
None within the terminal but areas to the sides allow most stuff to be seen. Several hangers exist up the road. Access was granted to a couple. Most of whats parked outside can be logged. No issues with security or the locals.

AIRSIDE
International terminal has window views of the runway and some domestic stands.

HOTELS
Airways Hotel – extremely expensive but a very nice hotel and expect to see all movements.

The cheaper rooms don’t have a view. If you want a room with a view you have to book a Dakota Junior Suite and request floor 2 or higher. You will have a balcony with a great view of the runway.

A room with a view is not essential though. Take the lift to the top floor where the restaurant, bar and swimming pool is. There is a resident DC3 hanging there and a great view of the field. Breakfast is also served here and they offer a buffet lunch and dinner as well.

The Dakota Junior rooms include complimentary Champagne, Martini or Vodka for 2 hours each at Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner as well as snacks and you have a view.

Try to arrive late morning and depart mid afternoon the next day if flights allow to get value for money. The hotel didn’t have a problem with late check out and have a free shuttle to the airport.

A couple more hotels have opened up just down the road from Airways. From the brochure the Restaurant at the Gateway hotel offers a balcony and views of the field. Not sure about the rooms. I havent checked prices but this may be a cheaper option.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Not the busiest of places but very nice to watch Air Nuigini DCH8’s etc flying past. The scenery is amazing as well. You do however need to spend a little time here to get most things. It seems that some of the aircraft act like buses and may not return for several hours. Some of the stuff that went early morning didn’t return and new stuff gradually came in throughout the day. Expect to see most of the fleets for Air Nuigini and Airlines of PNG as well as some smaller stuff like twin otters and islanders etc, and a few helicopters.

There are 2 unmarked F28s on the far side. Reportedly P2-ANI and ANS WFU since at least 2009. On the way into the airport there is an Air Nuigini DC3 on a pole.
