GUATEMALA

Guatemala City – Feb 2017

LANDSIDE
The terminal has good views albeit through 2 layers of glass. All movements should be seen and some aircraft on the far side on the mil ramp and by the hangers should be readable.

The TAG ( main domestic airline ) terminal and general aviation are down the other end of the airport on the opposite side and can’t be seen from the main terminal. However you have to pass through security to access them. My hotel shuttle was dropping me off. He just told them I was going to the TAG terminal and they let us in with no security check. From here I was effectively airside and could go anywhere I wanted. I was a bit unsure about why I had been allowed to do this. But I asked a guy in the TAG building and he said it was no problem to take photos. He took me to a spot alongside a taxiway with good views of the runway and said as long as I stayed on the grass I was fine. There are several hangers around this area mostly with GA aircraft and you are walking on taxiways. TAG have 2 hangers next to each other and some of their aircraft will be inside. You can see into them by walking around the TAG building. I stayed here for a couple of hours and nobody had any issues with me being there. I was shocked at the lack of security as I could have walked onto the runway and taken anything I wanted in there.

AIRSIDE
Good views from the main terminal.

A right seat for arrival and departure would be the best chance of seeing stuff parked by the hangers that can’t be seen from the main terminal.

HOTELS
The Crown Plaza reportedly had excellent rooftop views but has since closed. Not sure whether this is permanent. I stayed at the Hilton which was only 5-10 mins drive away and provided a free shuttle. There weren’t any views as it was low rise but it looked like the Radisson or Holiday Inn would have good views of arrivals or departures depending what runway direction they are using.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Not very busy but theres quite lot parked at the airport and its well worth a visit. Avianca Central America base there ATRs here and I managed 5 out of 6. A couple that departed first thing didn’t return for several hours or even that day though. TAG have several flights on weekdays with only a couple on the weekends and park at there own hanger facility.

There is an Air Force base here with some stored F27s, DC6 and other stuff.

A large number of smaller general aviation stuff is parked around and a couple of Biz where present.

Gulfstream N628HC and E20 HC-CDM are stored nearby the main terminal.
