GLOBAL SPOTTING REPORTS
DENMARK
Copenhagen – Jul 2019
LANDSIDE
As far as I know there are no views from the terminals. You will need to get to the Flyvergrillen or long term parking areas to see stuff here. I heard its about 45 mins walk to the Flyvergrillen. The car parks would have shuttle buses. Flyvergrillen is on google maps if your not sure about its location.
Flyvergrillen is a fast food burger joint with an elevated outside viewing area. There are no views of the terminal from here but excellent views of the parallel runways and some parked aircraft on the other side. Its open from 1030am till 2130 summer / 1800 winter and serves burgers / sausages / beer / ice cream etc. Its possible to spot from outside before it opens, the views just aren’t quite as good.
Car Parks P17/19. There is a small road running between these car parks. I parked up along here. Good views of arrivals or departures depending upon direction. Decent optics are needed for stuff on the far runway.
Driving or walking towards these car parks takes you past the hanger and commuter ramp.
AIRSIDE
Excellent views and possible to stay airside on arrival which is what I recommend if you don’t have a car.
HOTELS
I believe the Hilton has excellent views but its likely to cost you.
WHAT TO EXPECT
SAS base some of there fleet along with some CRJ9’s. Several Norwgian B737’s live here. Wideroe operate there DHC8 400’s a few times a day. Other than that the occasional charter flight and various European flights keep things going.
If your thinking of taking a car across the bridge between Malmo and Copenhagen you need to weigh up the costs. The bridge was aprox 45 pound each way in 2012. Presumably costs more by now. They will also charge a fortune to crop off a car rental in another country. Much cheaper to get the train between CPH and Malmo City centre.
Billund – July 2019
LANDSIDE
I didn’t notice any from the terminal but didn’t look that hard. The perimeter road in front of the Zleep hotel has a layby which provides good views of the ramp and runway. There are views of the maintenance area for the ATRs on the other side of the airport from here, although you can only read a few off. Cargo stands can also be seen. Further down this road is the British Airways hanger for the D328s.
A car would be preferable to get around to the other side. Along with the ATRs there are several hangers to explore including Sun Air whose private Jets and D328 where parked inside.
AIRSIDE
HOTELS
Zleep Hotel – I didn’t stay here. Fairly expensive but would provide good views.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Not particularly busy but the main attraction being the stored ATRs. British Airways / Sun Air D328s live here although only a few seem to fly each day and others are seconded elsewhere on charters. 3 Meridiana MD80s remain stored. Other than that Danish Air transport have some flights and SAS have a couple of ATRs each morning.
Sonderborg
Another place for ATRs on maintenance or WFU with a couple in the process of being broken up. Not as many as Billund. The only scheduled flights seem to be an Aisle Express ATR to Copenhagen. I managed a couple of glimpses into the hangers which had a couple of Biz along with one for ATR maintenance but they wouldn’t let me in any.
